entre el cuerpo y la mugre;

u carne contra la mugre;

Epitaph on Interstate 80, Nevada

A miracle, just take a look around:
the inescapable earth. Wislawa Szymborska

The world is a grave. With all its exits barred. The only
station available is Pilgrim Radio, whose preachers tell you
of your need
for penance and salvation and attempt to convince that the body
is never worth it. Even though you know the loneliness
you feel in the landscape is only an echo of the body’s grave
an specific sadness, you listen: light connecting to the dirt

with a sigh, like the blade of a guillotine; the dead dissolving
into dirt.
Fields the size of small countries. Dead cattle.
The rest of the herd only
grazing happily, brushing up against the pockets and the graves
of their bodies. Even if, the preachers tell you, you succumb to need
and find someone lovely enough to tempt you out of loneliness
into longing, you can still turn away from the pleasures of the body

and find your way back into the sufferings of the body
by striking a match and slipping your fingers into the flame.
The dirt of the world drifts through the rooms of the heart.
What other loneliness do you need: the world is a grave,
it is the mind’s only mirror.
The dead are with you, part of the journey: smears of hunger and need
on the tarmac; blisters of flesh in the tread of a tire. Small, open graves.

And those preachers who regard the flesh as nothing but a grave,
who burn, literally, because of lust and beauty; men for whom the body
is a coffin inside which the heart travels and kneads,
day after day, chamber by chamber, the compost and flotsam and dirt
of its own desires; men for whom the soul is a new coin, the only
one not minted for spending (such thrift, surely, buys nothing
but loneliness),

what would they make, I wonder, of your loneliness
if they knew how it had your kneeling now, as if beside a grave,
next to a doe in the grass by the side of the road; how it’s only
in death that her tongue swooning from her mouth makes a bridge
between her body and the dirt;
how, for the keys you carried once —prayers and pleading—
you have no need.

When you finally rise there are two slight depressions kneed
into the grass and you discover here the real pennant of loneliness—
the flensed skin of a doe’s back trailing its sash against the dirt;
the sudden flare of fascia like nothing you’d imagined about the grave,
but like the lining of a jacket a woman might throw, casually,
about her body when stepping out in strapless ball gown with her lover,
the only

man she’ll ever need, even after they have sunk her, finally,
into her grave.
However you look at it, the loneliness of the world begins in the body.
And the body earns its dirt, and all its delight, in this world only.
